Mesoamerican Orchids Specialist Group
The Mesoamerican Orchid Specialists Group is a volunteer network whose objective is to contribute to conserving the orchid flora in the area. The group belongs to the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Its mission is to contribute to the international effort to conserve plant diversity, supplying technical support and promoting developing and executing programs to study, document, save, restore, and manage orchids and their habitats. The Group's primary objectives are:
• Collect, document, and disseminate information about orchid diversity and conservation. • Facilitate appropriate contacts to increase efforts by individuals and organizations that work on orchid conservation. • Determine and regularly check the status and needs of orchids and the habitats that are rich in orchids. • Make specific recommendations for the species to be properly managed and for their survival. • Promote activities that teach farmers, conservationists, and the public about orchid conservation methods and their importance.
The Mesoamerican Group's recent efforts have been concentrated on encouraging updating the list of species in danger of extinction and the endemic species present in each of the area's countries. |
