Overview
Epiphytic plants are a vital and poorly studied component of the biological diversity of the Tropics. Unfortunately, many species are threatened by a combination of factors among which deforestation and illegal extraction are the most important. According to its mission, the conservation of epiphytic plants is a fundamental activity of the Lankester Botanical Garden .
Joining efforts with national institutions and organizations such as the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the National System of Conservation Areas, the Charles H. Lankester Foundation, and international institutions, such as the Orchid Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, the Lankester Botanical Garden develops projects and activities aiming at researching the diversity and status of wild orchid populations.
Through their projects and activities, the garden's researchers support the implementation of the Agreement of Biological Diversity of Costa Rica, the World Strategy for the Conservation of Plants and the World Action Plan for the Conservation of Orchids of the UICN. |
