“CONSERVATION AND MONITORING OF MESO-AMERICAN ORCHIDS”

Started in 2005, this project is led by Vincent Savolainen (RBG, Kew, UK) and Jorge Warner (Jardín Botánico Lankester, Costa Rica). The team records orchid diversity and is establishing long-term monitoring sites in the Monteverde area and in the National Parks of Coco Island and Tapanti. It aims to develop the necessary strategies, policies and material transfer agreements for conservation and sustainable use of orchids, to undertake a pilot study on DNA barcoding for conservation and trade surveillance, and to provide research training in orchid biology, linking with global efforts to build the orchid tree-of-life. The project also provides help to implement the CBD’s Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and the orchid action plan of the World Conservation Union.
